Kernels lose game, Goodrum

GENEVA, Ill. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost more than a game Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning brought home the winning run and ended the Kernels' five-game winning streak.

Earlier shortstop Niko Goodrum was removed from the field by ambulance after suffering a concussion in a homeplate collision. He is expected to miss at least the next seven days.

Kernels pitcher Tyler Jones walked Rock Shoulders, lifting Kane County to a 3-2 win.

A double by Albert Almora started Kane County's one-out winning rally. Dan Vogelbach, who had earlier homered and doubled, was walked intentionally and Jeimer Candelario followed with a line drive single to right that loaded the bases.

The Kernels had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Goodrum's two-out, two-run single.

Goodrum stole second and tried to score on Jorge Polanco's single to left. He was thrown out at the plate and was injured in a collision with Kane County catcher Willson Contreras, forcing him to leave the game.

Goodrum was taken to a local hospital where he was checked out. According Manager Jake Mauer, Goodrum was diagnosed with a concussion. He will miss at least seven days.

Mauer said in a text message that Goodrum was "doing OK" and was back from the hospital after the game.

Vogelbach hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the third to cut the Kernels' lead to 2-1.

Vogelbach doubled leading off the Kane County sixth, moved to third on a fly out and scored on Hudson Boyd's wild pitch, tying the game 2-2.

The Kernels squandered a chance to retake the lead, getting runners to second and third with no outs in the seventh. Tyler Grimes singled and went to third on Michael Quesada's double. Jeremias Pineda took a called third strike, J.D. Williams grounded out and Candido Pimentel struck out swinging to end the threat.

Boyd scattered six hits and two runs over six innings and struck out six. Josue Montanez pitched two scoreless innings. Jones (3-2) took the loss, allowing two hits in 1.1 innings.

Kernels outfielder Byron Buxton was out of Mauer's line up for the second consecutive game. The Kernels skipper said in a text message before the game that Buxton was "just a little sore. He'll be fine."

Minneapolis Star-Tribune Twins beat reporter LaVelle E. Neal III reported Sunday afternoon that Buxton would miss a few days with a sore right thumb.

The Kernels close out the series at Kane County on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. They return home Wednesday to open a six-game homestand. They play Quad Cities on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
