Yanecek helps Prairie split in Dubuque

DUBUQUE - Sophomore Drew Yanecek was promoted to the varsity Monday and helped the Prairie Hawks snap a four-game losing streak.

Yanecek gave up only one run in six innings as the No.8 Hawks trimmed Dubuque Hempstead, 3-1, in the second game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Dubuque.

Hempstead won the first game, 12-8, with a six-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Yanecek earned his first victory for the varsity by allowing only five hits in six innings. Ty Mougin pitched the seventh inning for the save.

Tyler Butz, Trey Beckman and Mitch Peters collected RBIs for Prairie in the victory.

The split left Prairie at 18-10 overall and 12-6 in the Valley Division of the MVC. Prairie and Linn-Mar are tied for first place at 12-6, with Dubuque Wahlert (12-7), Cedar Falls (14-8) and Xavier (12-8) all in contention.

Hempstead finished the day at 10-15 overall and 9-11 in the Mississippi Division.
