Jacob Olson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Jacob Olson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Olson, a 6-foot point guard, has scored 25 points in both of Jefferson's basketball games this season against Clinton and Marion. He ranks third in Class 4A in scoring at 25 points per game.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Jacob Olson:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

JACOB: When I hit a game-winning shot in eighth grade to go to the championship. There were a few seconds left on the clock and I hit a fadeaway 3-pointer.

MSR: What is your favorite team highlight in sports?

JACOB: When we upset Cedar Falls in the substate finals to go to the state tournament with a game-winning shot in 2012.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

JACOB: My aunt Melissa. She put a basketball in my hand since the day I was born. She has given me an opportunity to play and I am grateful for that.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

JACOB: Play college basketball at a high level and then go play professional basketball somewhere.

MSR: What are your favorite subjects in school?

JACOB: History and Science.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

JACOB: When we rang bells for the Salvation Army, because we raised a lot of money for a good cause.
