Alissa Oney commits to Maryville U.

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Alissa Oney has accepted an offer to play basketball at Maryville University in St. Louis next season.

Maryville is an NCAA Division II school that competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Oney, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 7.5 points this season as the Warriors tied for the Mississippi Valley Conference title and reached the Class 4A state tournament. She collected 65 assists and 47 steals.

Oney received a phone call from Maryville in late February. She visited the school about 10 days ago and commited last Tuesday.

"It was kind of sudden," she said Monday. "They called me up and were wondering if I was still looking for a college. They got me right down there for a visit and I really liked it there, so I thought it was the right fit.

"I had some other options, but nothing really felt right when I took those visits," she said. "I'm really excited. I think it will be a lot of fun. I think the city has a lot to offer and a lot to do."

Oney is the third member of Washington's team who will play basketball in college next season, joining Tia Dawson (Dartmouth) and Ashley Piper (Colorado Christian).

Oney's sister, Katelin, plays basketball at the University of Northern Iowa and has helped the Panthers make the NCAA tournament for two straight years. Katelin Oney will be a senior next season at UNI, giving the Oney family two college players at the same time.

Maryville finished 11-15 overall and 6-12 in the league this season. Coach Chris Ellis has compiled a 171-97 record in 10 years with the Saints.
