Hobbs wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Aleena Hobbs is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hobbs is one of the top basketball players in the Metro area and the fourth-leading scorer in the Mississippi Valley Conference at 17.2 points per game. She also is averaging 5.5 rebounds for the Warriors, who have a 7-3 record.

Hobbs is a versatile player who can play multiple positions on the floor. She has scored in double figures in all 10 games with highs of 24 points against Davenport Central, 23 against Jefferson and 21 against Iowa City West.

Hobbs collected 15 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots when Washington defeated Xavier last week.

She is also an accomplished volleyball player and was named first team all-MVC and second team all-Metro this past season.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Aleena Hobbs:

MSR: What has been your favorite individual highlight in sports?

ALEENA: Last year in a basketball game against Kennedy, I made a 3-point shot to give us a lead and win the game. It was my birthday so it was a great way to celebrate my birthday!

MSR: What has been your favorite team highlight in sports?

ALEENA: Beating Waukee in the regional final last year after they had beat us in the regular season and having the opportunity to play in the state basketball tournament.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

ALEENA: My dad, because he has always pushed me to get better and knows so much about basketball.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

ALEENA: To go to state again this year, play basketball in college and help my college team accomplish four years of success.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

ALEENA: Science. I have really enjoyed all my science classes during my time at Washington.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

ALEENA: Visiting a nursing home with my basketball team and singing Christmas carols to the residents. Even though I don't sing very well, they really enjoyed it.
