Kirkwood wins twice in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. —  Sulliam Rios Reyes scored on a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday as the Kirkwood baseball team nipped Miami-Hamilton, 7-6, in Winter Haven, Fla.

Rios Reyes led off the ninth with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ozzie Adams and reached third on a wild pitch. Miami-Hamilton walked two batters to intentionally load the bases, but Rios Reyes trotted home with the winning run on the balk.

Adams went 3-for-4 for the Eagles. Rios Reyes was 2-for-3, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Tyler Butz had a triple and two RBIs.

Jeffrey Castillo pitched six strong innings for Kirkwood, allowing three runs on one hit and five walks. Shane Kemp picked up the victory in relief.

The Eagles (4-0) rallied for a 5-4 victory over the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in their second game Saturday.

Will Ross was touched for four runs in the first inning, but he pitched shutout ball the rest of the way in the seven-inning ballgame. Ross struck out seven batters and allowed only two earned runs.

Kirkwood scored five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Angel Merced went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Matt Paciello, Kemp and Adams also had RBIs.
