Maddie Hansen wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Maddie Hansen is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hansen is an all-star catcher for the sixth-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks (34-6), who will face No.3 Southeast Polk (28-9) in the first round of the Class 5A state softball tournament Tuesday morning at 11:30 in Fort Dodge.

Hansen has enjoyed a fabulous career for Jefferson with an entire full year to go. She has a career batting average of .448 since she began playing as an eighth grader with 16 home runs and 163 RBIs in 144 games.

Hansen is hitting .455 this season with 14 doubles, seven homers and 46 RBIs despite being pitched very carefully. She led Class 5A in RBIs last year when she drove in 69 runs while hitting .500 with seven home runs.

Hansen was named first team all-state last year as a sophomore when she helped Jefferson place fifth at the state tournament. She hit .426 as a freshman in 2012 and batted .354 as an eighth grader in 2011.
