Saints, Cougars search for 1st win

There are two intriguing high school football games on tap Thursday night in Week 2 of the regular season.

The Xavier Saints will face Davenport Assumption at Brady Street Stadium in Davenport, looking to rebound from a 24-2 loss at Dowling Catholic last week.

The Kennedy Cougars will host the Washington Warriors at Kingston Stadium, hoping to bounce back from a tough 12-9 loss at Iowa City West last week.

The Saints stayed No.1 in Class 3A in the Des Moines Register poll this week despite the loss to Dowling, which is ranked No.1 in Class 4A.

The Washington Warriors remained No.3 in the Class 4A rankings following their 43-26 verdict over Jefferson in the season opener last week.

NO.1 XAVIER (0-1) at NO.5 DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION (0-1)

The rebuilt Saints played well on defense in their 24-2 loss to Dowling on a stormy night in West Des Moines last Friday, holding the high-powered Maroons to just 231 yards and three touchdowns.

Dowling quarterback Ryan Boyle, who torched the Saints for 365 yards and six touchdowns in the Class 4A championship game last year, was held under wraps in the season opener. Boyle, who has committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, completed 12 of 17 passes for 150 yards and finished with minus-8 yards rushing.

Xavier played well on defense, but the Saints could not mount an attack of their own. New quarterback Bryce Schulte completed 7 of 22 passes for 46 yards and two interceptions. Jay Kortemeyer was their leading rusher with 18 yards on seven tries.

Xavier finished with just 120 yards of total offense against Dowling and will need to get untracked against Davenport Assumption.

Assumption got whacked by Class 4A No.4 Bettendorf, 41-6, in the opener last week.

Quarterback Tim Doyle had a tough night for Assumption, completing only 5 of 17 passes for 66 yards and three interceptions. Elijah Williams carried the ball eight times for 72 yards and a touchdown for Assumption.

Xavier and Davenport Assumption both dropped from Class 4A to Class 3A this year following the move to district football. This is a non-district game.

NO.3 WASHINGTON (1-0) at KENNEDY (0-1)

Thursday, 7:15 p.m.
Kingston Stadium
KGYM-1600 AM/107.5 FM

Washington quarterbacks Reid Snitker and T.J. Vogel hit 10 of 15 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns last week in their 43-26 conquest of Jefferson. Snitker threw both of the TD passes to Isaiah Nimmers, who caught four passes for 108 yards.

Speedster Landen Akers collected 208 all-purpose yards for the Warriors with three kickoff returns for 94 yards, two catches for 46 yards, two rushing attempts for 42 yards and one punt return for 26 yards. He returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown.

Tavian Patrick ran 10 times for 139 yards and a 70-yard TD for Washington. Connor Vincent led the Warriors on defense with 9.5 tackles. O'Rien Vance made six tackles and Snitker was credited with 4.5 stops.

Kennedy owned a 9-0 lead over Iowa City West last week, but the Trojans rallied for the 12-9 victory. The Cougars are looking for a balanced attack, but new quarterback Sammy Lizarraga completed only 12 of 28 passes for 91 yards and one interception.

Kennedy rushed the ball 39 times for 183 yards. Logan Wedo carried 12 times for 89 yards, Jay Blank carried 12 times for 70 yards and Tyler Dralle rushed nine times for 62 yards and the team's only touchdown. Shaun Beyer caught five passes for 45 yards.

This is a non-district game.
