J-Hawks clobber Davenport West, 62-0

DAVENPORT - It's been a long time since the Jefferson J-Hawks were the big bullies on a football field, but it happened Thursday night in Davenport.

The J-Hawks scored three touchdowns in 92 seconds in the first quarter Thursday and belted the hapless Falcons from Davenport West, 62-0, at Brady Street Stadium.

Jefferson raced to an imposing 49-0 lead at halftime and Coach Brian Webb had the rare luxury of clearing his bench in the second half.

The J-Hawks squared their record at 2-2 heading into next Thursday's game against Kennedy at Kingston Stadium.

Jefferson dominated the game on offense, defense and special teams. The J-Hawks held Davenport West to 32 yards of total offense in the entire game with swarming defense.

"Offensively we played lights out," said Webb. "Defensively we attacked the ball."

It took Jefferson nearly 10 minutes to score its first touchdown, but once the J-Hawks found the end zone they kept coming back for more.

"That was awesome," said Jefferson quarterback Jesse Furrow, the transfer from Indiana who has injected new life into the team. "Everybody played with intensity the whole game. Everybody was up for the game."

The J-Hawks belted Davenport North, 41-7, last week and outscored the two Quad Cities teams 103-7 in back-to-back games.

Tavian Rashed scored on a 5-yard with 2:13 left in the first quarter and it was 7-0. Mason Furnish caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Furrow just 15 seconds later after a Davenport West fumble and it was 14-0. Mason Short scored on a 7-yard run with 41 seconds left in the opening period and it was 21-0.

The J-Hawks topped themselves with four TDs in the second quarter on another 7-yard run by Short, a 29-yard pass from Furrow to Brady Bernauer, an 11-yard strike from Furrow to Valentino Green and an 82-yard interception return by Green.

That made it 49-0 zip at halftime and ignited the continuous clock for the third quarter.

Manny Olutunde broke loose for a 60-yard punt return and a 53-yard kickoff return in the first half and Jacob Beaton had a 45-yard punt return.

Jefferson scored twice in the second half on a 15-yard interception return by Colton Knox and a 65-yard run by Kevonte Jones.

Jefferson quickly turned its attention to next Thursday night's encounter with Kennedy at Kingston Stadium. Webb said the J-Hawks need to defeat a Metro rival to achieve genuine respectability after years of futility.

"Absolutely," he said. "Until we start beating Cedar Rapids Metro teams, nobody is going to respect us."

Furrow has lived in Cedar Rapids for only six months or so and has never faced Kennedy in any sport, but he's already in the mood for facing the Cougars.

"We don't like each other too much, from what I'm told," said Furrow. "I'm looking forward to it.

"Hey, next week a lot bigger game," he yelled at his teammates. "Let's go get Kennedy, boys."

Dalton Kuehl, Jefferson's top lineman, returned to action Thursday night after recovering from a leg injury and enjoyed the 62-0 blowout.

"I think it shows how hard we've worked in practice the last two weeks," he said. "We've got playmakers. We've got playmakers this year."

Kuehl is ready to face the Cougars.

"I think it will be great," he said. "We're expecting to win. We're ready to go."

Green scored on his 82-yard interception return in the second quarter when he stepped in front of a Davenport West pass in the flat and raced untouched to the end zone.

"They did the same play a couple of times in a row so I anticipated it," he said. "I was so happy. I was just smiling when I was running down the field."
