No.1 Warriors, No.1 Saints ready to go

High school football fans in the Metro area have the rare luxury of supporting two top-ranked teams this week with the Washington Warriors and Xavier Saints.

Both teams have home games Friday.

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Des Moines Register, entertain Muscatine at Kingston Stadium. The Saints, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by the Register, entertain Maquoketa.

Marion hosts DeWitt Central, Prairie visits Burlington, Linn-Mar entertains Waterloo East and Cedar Valley Christian travels to Lansing Kee in the other Metro games Friday night.

MUSCATINE at WASHINGTON

Kingston Stadium, 7:15 p.m.
Class 4A District 6 Game

Records:

Muscatine (3-1 overall, 0-0 district)
Washington (4-0 overall, 0-0 district)

Washington rolled by Linn-Mar, 43-3, last week and will play the first district football game in school history against Muscatine.

Tavian Patrick has rushed for 377 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Warriors. Johnny Dobbs has rushed for 234 yards with five TDs. Speedster Landen Akers has scored four times for Washington. The Warriors are averaging 38.7 points and allowing just 9 per game.

Muscatine quarterback Matt Westkamp has passed for 438 yards, rushed for 251 yards and accounted for six touchdowns. Kevin Johnson has carried the ball 35 times for 383 yards and five TDs.

MAQUOKETA at XAVIER

Saints Field
7:15 p.m., KMRY-1450 AM
Class 3A District 4 Game

Records:

Maquoketa (0-4 overall, 0-2 district)
Xavier (3-1 overall, 2-0 district)

The Saints are marching again behind a strong defense and effective running game. Xavier is allowing just 163.3 yards and 8.2 points per game, making it tough for Class 3A opponents to get anything going.

Jay Kortemeyer has rushed for 427 yards in four games for the Saints. Bryce Schulte has completed 22 of 45 passes for 253 yards, but has yet to throw a touchdown pass. Schulte has run for seven TDs. Dallas Klein has kicked four field goals for Xavier. Dylan Eller has three interceptions.

Sean Murphy returned two kickoffs for touchdowns last week in an easy win at DeWitt Central.

Maquoketa quarterback Justin Snyder has passed for 327 yards and rushed for 120 yards. Maquoketa has been outscored, 135-30, in its four games.

DEWITT CENTRAL at MARION

Class 3A District 4 Game

Records:

DeWitt Central (2-2 overall, 0-2 district
Marion (1-3 overall, 0-1 district)

Marion has lost three straight games, leaving Coach Tony Perkins one victory shy of matching Les Hipple for the most wins in school history.

Kory Walsh has rushed 66 times for 340 yards and five touchdowns for Marion. Quarterbacks Gage Kray and Hayden Meister have completed 25 of 56 passes for four TDs. The Indians are averaging only 228.3 yards of total offense per game.

DeWitt quarterback Logan Sheppard has passed for 272 yards and rushed for 292 yards. Mason Cousins has carried the ball 50 times for 293 yards for DeWitt.

PRAIRIE at BURLINGTON

7:15 p.m., Burlington H.S.
Class 4A District 6 Game

Records:

Prairie (2-2 overall, 0-0 district)
Burlington (3-1 overall, 0-0 district)

Prairie quarterback Trey Beckman suffered concussion-like symptoms in last week's game against North Scott. Coach Mike Morrissey said Beckman has recovered from the symptons, but he will not play against Burlington as a precaution.

Sophomore Dakota Simonsen, who relieved Beckman last week and threw the game-winning touchdown pass against North Scott, will get the nod

Keagan Pinter has carried the ball 64 times for 437 yards for Prairie. JoJo Simpson helped the Hawks beat North Scott with his strong punting and is averaging 41.5 yards per boot, the best in the Metro.

Garrett Grimshaw has rushed for 434 yards and six touchdowns for Burlington. Jonathan Langerued has passed for 374 yards and seven touchdowns. Joe Mack has six TD catches.

WATERLOO EAST at LINN-MAR

7:15 p.m., Linn-Mar Stadium
Class 4A District 5 Game

Records:

Waterloo East (0-4 overall, 0-0 district)
Linn-Mar (3-1 overall, 0-0 district)

Linn-Mar won its first three games before suffering a 43-3 loss to Washington last week.

Perrion Scott has carried the ball 36 times for 298 yards for the Lions and has scored four touchdowns. Ryan Schmidt has passed for 381 yards and two touchdowns. Schmidt has scored seven TDs.

Waterloo East has been outscored, 161-14, in its four games this season. Chase Pryor has passed for 267 yards and one TD. Jibri Petroski has carried the ball 36 times for 165 yards and one touchdown.

CEDAR VALLEY at LANSING KEE

7 p.m., Kee High School 
8-Player District 4 Game

Records:

Cedar Valley (1-3 overall, 0-2 district)
Lansing Kee (3-1 overall, 1-1 district)

Central Elkader scored a whopping 94 points against Cedar Valley last week with 13 touchdowns and eight 2-point conversions. Elkader ran for seven touchdowns, passed for two touchdowns and scored four times on kick returns.

Lansing Kee quarterback Dylon Peterson has passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns. He's also run for four TDs. Clay Olson has rushed 33 times for 159 yards and four touchdowns for Lansing.
