Schaefer sets record as Kohawks roll

Rachel Schaefer tried to keep her pursuit of the Coe College record for most kills at arm's length, but a text message Wednesday morning from her oldest brother Jake touched her deeply and got her thinking about it.

Schaefer, a 5-foot-10 senior from Waterloo, needed only two kills against Loras Wednesday night in an Iowa Conference volleyball match to break the all-time mark, so the chances were very good she'd get it.

Her paternal grandfather, who used to come to all her games in a variety of sports, passed away when she was a freshman at Coe and Jake wanted his sister to know how delighted their grandfather would have been about her impending school record.

"Jake said, 'I know he would be very proud of you, and we're all very proud of how hard you've been working,'" she related. "It's more sentimental than anything."

Schaefer collected 11 kills as the Kohawks swept Loras, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17, at Eby Fieldhouse.

Kaitlin McClimon, now one of Coe's assistant coaches, held the old record for kills with 1,363. Schaefer snapped that mark in the first game and finished the night with 1,372 for her four-year career.

"There's a lot of season left, but it's a great feeling," Schaefer said about the record. "I'm just going to keep working. That's all I can really do.

"A record is a record, but I want to compete with my team. I want to see how far we can take it."

Coe raised its overall record to 17-3 and lifted its conference mark to 3-0. Loras fell to 9-12 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Schaefer jumps well and has good timing on her powerful slams.

"She's kind of an all-around player," said Coe Coach DeAnn Woodin. "She can pass well, she can hit well, she can play defense.

"She's got the whole package. It's nice to have someone you can rely on."

Rachel Bosworth led the Kohawks with 12 kills against Loras. Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 36 assists and seven kills. Alissa Wittenburg had 13 digs.
