Eagles belt 6 homers in sweep

The Kirkwood Eagles hit six home runs Wednesday and swept an ICCAC conference doubleheader from Ellsworth, 11-0 and 13-2, at Kirkwood.

Both softball games lasted only five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Nicky Simpson pitched a no-hitter for Kirkwood in the opener.

Lexie Biehl socked two homers and drove in eight runs in the doubleheader. Brooke Prior, Jasmine Ragusi, Natalie Clark and Lexi Quandt also connected for round-trippers in the twinbill.

Biehl has walloped 16 home runs this season and Prior has belted 13 to rank among the national leaders in NJCAA Division II. As a team, the 11th-ranked Eagles lead the nation with 75 home runs in 34 games.

Biehl has 54 RBIs this season. Prior has 46 RBIs.

Biehl went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and six RBIs in the opener. Prior was 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Ragusi also homered in the first game for her seventh of the year.

Simpson (9-4) struck out 10 batters in five innings in her no-hitter in the first game. She did not walk anyone, but she hit a batter to foil a perfect game.

Clark was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in the second game. Biehl and Quandt had a homer and two RBIs. Tara Walls was 2-for-3. Prior (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts for the victory.

The sweep lifted Kirkwood to 27-7 overall and 15-1 in the league. Ellsworth fell to 3-29 and 0-14.
