Charipar helps Marion sweep West Delaware

Andrew Charipar knew he needed a triple to hit for the cycle Thursday night, but he simply hit the ball too well.

He had to settle for a walk-off home run instead.

Charipar went 4-for-4 and socked two homers as the Marion Indians dumped West Delaware, 14-3, in five innings in the first game of a Wamac Conference doubleheader at Marion.

The Indians won the nightcap, 10-0, in six innings to complete the sweep.

Charipar already had a single, double and home run when he came to the plate in the fifth inning with Marion holding a 12-3 lead and a runner on base. He knew he needed a three-bagger to finish the cycle, which is a rare feat in baseball.

"I actually talked to a teammate about it," he said. "He mentioned something in the dugout about getting a triple."

Charipar crushed the ball to left-center, and for a few seconds it looked like he might get that triple.

"Off the bat, I didn't think it was going out, so I was hustling toward first and then I guess it kept going," he said with a smile. "I was happy either way."

The ball sailed over the fence for a two-run homer, stopping the game by the 10-run rule.

Marion Coach Steve Fish wasn't aware of the possible cycle until his youngest son said something to him.

"My 12-year-old was on the book (the scorebook)," Fish related. "He goes, 'Hey, Dad, if he's going for a triple, don't hold him up at second base.' "

The Indians got another walk-off victory in the nightcap when Byron Fish, another of the coach's sons, knocked in Trev Biery with an RBI single to make it 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Biery hit a double to get into scoring position.

Marion scored 24 runs and collected 23 hits, making life easier for starting pitchers Tyler Hedtke and Josh Davila. Hedtke tossed a complete game in the opener with six strikeouts, while Davila went 5 2/3 innings in the nightcap and allowed only two hits.

The twin-killing lifted the Indians to 22-13 overall and 18-10 in the Wamac Conference. Marion had a slow start in May when injuries depleted the pitching staff, but the Indians have put together another solid campaign.

"When those injuries happened to the guys at the beginning of the year, I would have taken that record in a heartbeat," Fish said. "I'm very proud of where we are and what we've done."

Fish has massaged a young pitching staff into an effective unit. And on offense, the Indians come up swinging.

"We've got a pretty good offensive team this year. Everybody likes to swing," Charipar remarked. "I think everybody 1 through 9 (in the lineup) can hit the ball on any given day."

The aggressive Indians do not take a lot of pitches.

"We have to be that way," Fish explained. "With our pitching, we're not overpowering. We don't know what we're going to get (from the pitchers), so we have to score some runs. Sometimes it's the first team to 10 runs. It's that mentality."

Mitch Wagner went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Marion in the first game. He went 2-for-3 in the nightcap and finished the day 5-for-7 with a triple and four RBIs. Byron Fish was 3-for-4 in the twinbill with five RBIs.

West Delaware fell to 16-17 overall and 16-12 in the Wamac. The Hawks committed eight errors in the second game.
