Caitlyn Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Caitlyn Smith of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith, a sophomore, is a key member of the Marion High School volleyball team. The Indians are ranked No. 4 in Class 4A with a 29-8 record heading into the postseason tournament.

Smith leads the powerful Wamac Conference in assists with 873 this year and is averaging 9.29 assists per set. She also has 129 digs, 45 kills, 38 blocks and 28 aces for the Indians.

Marion finished second in the Wamac Conference tournament on Tuesday, falling to top-ranked West Delaware in the finals.

Marion drew an opening-round bye in the Class 4A regional tournament and will host Clear Creek-Amana or Washington (Iowa) in the regional semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. Marion reached the semifinals of the state tournament last year.

Smith collected 244 assists last year as a freshman for the Marion varsity.
