Beyer wins Metro Spotlight Award

Shaun Beyer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Beyer, a senior, is one of the top football players in Iowa and a major reason the Cougars have reached the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs.

Kennedy (12-0) will face Bettendorf (12-0) in a battle of state powers in the Final 4 of the postseason tournament this Friday at 4:06 p.m. at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The winner will play for the title on Friday, Nov. 20.

Beyer played a huge role in Kennedy's 21-7 victory over Washington in the Class 4A quarterfinals Friday night. He caught a 61-yard touchdown pass, scored on a killer 88-yard interception return, punted six times for a healthy 45.2-yard average and had a big sack.

Beyer played tight end, wide receiver, tailback, quarterback, defensive end, linebacker and free safety against the Warriors. He also was used on a punt return, although he was called for a delay-of-game penalty when he called for a fair catch and began running with the ball. It was perhaps his only "mistake" in the entire game.

Beyer, 6-5, 210, is surely one of the most versatile players in the state. He committed to North Dakota State several months ago, but Nebraska and Air Force offered scholarships last week and he has not made a final decision about college.

Beyer has caught 38 passes this season for 744 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's carried the ball 41 times for 540 yards and five touchdowns. He leads Class 4A in punting and he's also one of the top tacklers on his team.
