Siebenga wins Metro Spotlight Award

Kirsten Siebenga of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Siebenga, a senior, turned in a strong performance at the state swimming meet in Marshalltown on Saturday and helped the Cougars finish ninth in the team standings with 128 points.

Siebenga helped Kennedy score 50.5 of those points at the Marshalltown YMCA.

She swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay that placed sixth in 1:48.56, swam the anchor again on the 200 freestyle relay that finished seventh in 1:38.18, and tied teammate Darby Manternach for 16th place in the 50 freestyle in 24.89.

The medley relay was worth 26 points for the Cougars, the freestyle relay was worth 24 points and her tie for 16th in the 50 was worth half a point.

Siebenga typified the spirit on the Kennedy swim team this year. It was a close-knit squad that set a goal of finishing in the top-10 at the state tournament and made it by pushing and encouraging each other.
