Burger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Mitchell Burger of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Burger, a 5-foot-10 senior, broke the school record for most points in a single game Friday night when he poured in 34 points in an 84-76 victory over Waterloo West in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball contest at Xavier.

Burger snapped the old school mark of 32 points set by Adam McDermott last season. He also popped in seven 3-pointers, tying the school record set by Jon Keller in 2010.

Burger got off to a relatively slow start for the Saints this season and had made only six 3-pointers all year prior to his outburst against Waterloo West Friday night. He raised his scoring average to 13.9 points and is contributing approximately 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds per game. He also had 14 points in a victory over Prairie Tuesday night.

Xavier is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A with a 7-1 record.

The Saints placed third at the Class 3A state tournament last season with a veteran team. Burger was the only returning starter from that club, but he's helped Coach Ryan Luehrsmann put a new team together that has a good shot at making a return trip to Des Moines.

Burger averaged 13.5 points last season as a junior, the second-best mark on the team, and he averaged 7.6 points for the varsity as a sophomore. He's collected 645 points and 73 3-pointers in his career.
