Washington honors 9 for Hall of Fame

Cedar Rapids Washington will induct nine new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

Seven former Washington athletes will be honored, along with former coach Bill Pinckney and broadcaster Ron Gonder.

Pinckney was a track coach at Washington for 26 years, including 17 years as the head coach. He was an assistant football coach for 20 years and an assistant wrestling coach for five years.

Gonder spent 31 years at WMT as the sports director or assistant sports director. He covered high school sports for many of those years.

The seven athletes are:

BILL BERGMAN (1967) - Three-time state champion swimmer and member of three state championship teams.

SANDY PARKS DUNCAN (1977) - State runner-up on balance beam in gymnastics and member of two state championship teams.

MIKE NOONAN (1983) - Second team all-state basketball, academic all-state and valedictorian.

KAYLA PIRTLE (1995) - Member of state basketball champions. Honorable Mention All-American.

MICHAEL MILAM (2000) - Played football, basketball and track. First team all-state in 1999 and second team all-state in 1998. Set six school records as running back and strong safety.

TRAVIS RHONE (2005) - Played football and basketball. First team all-state in football in 2003 and 2004. Set 15 school records as a running back.

RYAN PHELAN (2008) - Two-time state champion in swimming. Holds four school records. Received nine All-American honors.

The Hall of Fame ceremonies will begin with a social hour in the cafeteria at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Hall of Fame program at 5 p.m. The new inductees will be introduced between games of the girl/boy varsity doubleheader against Jefferson Friday night.
