KCRG 9.2 will broadcast MSR softball games

Guess what?

This Sunday's doubleheader in the Iowa Women's Softball League will be televised live by KCRG 9.2 from Coe College at 2 p.m.

The local ABC affiliate will broadcast the twinbill from Coe next Sunday, July 2 as well.

How about that!

The new league has gotten off to a fabulous start this season with 52 college players on four teams. All told, there are players from 24 different colleges and 35 high schools in the program.

The Iowa Women's Softball League is the only collegiate summer fast-pitch league in the state. Everything is going so well that we're looking into the possibility of expanding with four more teams in Des Moines in 2018.

Construction Materials will play Hawkeye Convenience Stores this Sunday at Coe, then Ironside Apparel and Emil's Hideaway will take center stage on the KCRG 9.2 broadcast on July 2.

Morgan Hawk, the lead broadcaster for Cedar Rapids Kernels games on KMRY radio, will handle the play-by-play duties for this Sunday's games. I will be joining Hawk as the color commentator.

Next week, former WMT sports director Ryan Schlader and Gazette sportswriter K.J. Pilcher will handle the broadcasting duties.

The Iowa Women's Softball League will run through Sunday, July 30 with  doubleheaders each Sunday at Kirkwood and Coe. We use a continuous batting order with free defensive substitution to make the playing time as equal as possible for everyone.

The league features players from NCAA schools (D-I, D-II and D-III) along  with players from NAIA schools and junior colleges. Now they'll get a rare chance to play on TV.

A voluntary $5 gate fee is collected between doubleheaders, but all students and senior citizens are admitted free of charge.
