Softball games are smash hit on KCRG 9.2

College softball players rarely get a chance to play their games on live TV, but that changed Sunday at Coe College.

The doubleheader between Construction Materials and Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the new Iowa Women's Softball League was  televised by KCRG 9.2 to a live audience in Eastern Iowa.

From all accounts, it was a smash hit.

The college athletes got a chance to showcase their skills on TV, the folks at KCRG 9.2 got a good show for their viewers, and the softball league got some terrific exposure.

Construction Materials swept the twinbill, 7-6 and 8-1.

Hawkeye Convenience Stores jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the first game, but Construction Materials scored five runs in the third inning to pull within 6-5.

It stayed that way until Alyssa Wiebel of Illinois State belted a  two-run homer to left-center in the fifth inning to give Construction Materials a 7- 6 lead and the victory.

Tawny Menster of Mount Mercy pitched two shutout innings in relief for  the victory in Game 1.

Monika Bevans of Kirkwood went 3-for-3 for Construction Materials in the first game. Paige Timmerman of Luther was 2-for-3. Addy Pender of Luther had two hits for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the opener.

Lexi Kinnaird of Kirkwood and Wiebel socked home runs for Construction Materials in their 8-1 victory in the second game. Hailey Duwa of Western Illinois, Wiebel and Kinnaird had two hits.

Morgan Christner of Illinois State pitched five strong innings for Construction Materials for the victory in Game 2. Bradi Yost of Ellsworth pitched two shutout innings in relief.

Ali Herdliska of South Dakota State and Emily Ira of Western Illinois had two hits for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the second game.

In the other doubleheader Sunday at Kirkwood, Emil's Hideaway and Ironside Apparel split their games.

Kelsey Aikey of Western Kentucky tossed a complete game for Emil's in a 7-4 victory in the opener. She struck out six batters and allowed only three hits. Taylor Jones had two hits and scored two runs for the victors and Jess Nearad had a two-run single.

Bethany Koskamp had two hits for Ironside Apparel in the opener.

Maddy Ryan of Coe had a big game for Ironside Apparel in a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. She went 3-for-4 with an RBI and also pitched a complete game.

Brittney Roby of Northern Iowa went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for Ironside in the second game. Jadyn Spencer, a member of the IGHSAU  Hall of Fame who played at Alabama, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hannah Onken of Wartburg also had two hits for the winners.
