Emil's Hideaway rules the IWSL

Terrific defense and strong pitching were the order of the day in the Iowa Women's Softball League games at Mount Mercy on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the teams that were supposed to play at Simpson College, wet weather won the day in Indianola.

Emil's Hideaway won both of its games at Busse Field in Cedar Rapids, topping Ironside Apparel and Hawkeye Convenience Stores. Hawkeye Convenience Stores defeated Ironside Apparel in the other contest.

Bosch Financial and Metro Sports Report were rained out at Simpson.

EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 4, IRONSIDE APPAREL 2

KyLeigh Becker of Loras tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts as Emil's Hideaway clipped Ironside Apparel in the first game. Becker allowed only three hits and one earned run.

Hailey Duwa of Western Illinois socked a solo home run and drove in two runs for Emil's. Erin Kuba of Utah State hit a two-run double and Taylor Jones of Indian Hills had two hits.

Abby Downs of the University of Northern Iowa had two hits for Ironside Apparel. Adara Opiola of UNI stroked an RBI triple.

HAWKEYE CONVENIENCE STORES 9, IRONSIDE APPAREL 2

Emily Ira of Western Illinois pitched five strong innings for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in Game. 2. She struck out 10 batters in five innings and allowed only one run on three hits.

Brittni LaFountaine of Illinois State had two RBIs for the winners. Alyssa Wiebel of Illinois State and Brie Tauber of Clarke had two hits and an RBI. Tianna Drahn of UNI collected a two-run single. Emma Hartman of Cornell scored two runs.

EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 3, HAWKEYE CONVENIENCE STORES 0

Emily Oler of Mount Mercy pitched a shutout for Emil's Hideaway in the final contest on Sunday. She scattered nine hits and helped herself by not walking a single batter.

Duwa went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. Taylor Jones of Indian Hills also had two hits. Wiebel had two hits, including a double, for Hawkeye Convenience Stores.

There were stellar plays on defense by all three teams Sunday, but Tauber stole the show with two spectacular plays at shortstop for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in Game 3. She dove to her right to snare a vicious line drive to end the fourth inning, then made an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch on a fly ball to short left field for the first out in the fifth.
