IWSL softball teams beat the heat

The five teams in the Iowa Women's Softball League battled each other and battled the heat Sunday with some interesting results.

Three of the five games were shortened to five innings with the temperature in the mid-90's and another game ended in a scoreless tie.

Ironside Apparel and Hawkeye Convenience Stores battled to a 0-0  deadlock in the first game at Mount Mercy, with both sides flashing  some stellar pitching and defense.

Hawkeye Convenience Stores blanked Emil's Hideaway, 8-0, in the middle game. And Emil's Hideaway turned around and topped Ironside Apparel,  7-1.

Metro Sports Report swept its doubleheader from Bosch Financial, 2-1  and 12-6, at Simpson College in Indianola.

HAWKEYE CONVENIENCE STORES 0

Brooke Craig of UNI sparkled for Ironside Apparel for all seven  innings of the scoreless duel. She allowed only five hits and struck  out two batters.

Morgan Christner of Illinois State and Jenna Schwartzhoff of Clarke  countered with a combined two-hitter for Hawkeye Convenience Stores.  Christner tossed the first five innings and Schwartzhoff pitched the  last two frames. Christner struck out four batters.

Hawkeye Convenience Stores had runners at second and third with one  out in the bottom of the seventh, but Craig got the final two outs to  preserve the deadlock.

The game was stopped after seven innings due to the heat.

HAWKEYE CONVENIENCE STORES 8,
EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 0

Emily Ira of Western Illinois and Erin Drahozal of Upper Iowa combined  on an eight-hit shutout for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the 8-0  victory over Emil's Hideaway in Game 2 at Mount Mercy.

Ira pitched five innings and collected nine strikeouts. Drahozal  tossed two scoreless frames to finish the victory.

Alyssa Wiebel went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Hawkeye  Convenience Stores. Kylee Biedermann of Clarke had a two-run triple,  Schwartzhoff contributed a two-run single and Ira had a run-scoring  double.

Erin Kuba of Utah State had two hits for Emil's Hideaway and Monika  Bevans of Kirkwood belted a triple.

EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 7,
IRONSIDE APPAREL 1

KyLeigh Becker of Luther pitched a complete game for Emil's Hideaway  in a 7-1 victory over Ironside Apparel in a five-inning affair to  finish the action at Mount Mercy.

Avery Guy of DMACC had two hits with a double and two RBIs for Emil's  Hideaway in the victory. Becker contributed a two-run double to help  her own cause in the circle.

Sydney Robertson of Mount Mercy and Maddy Ryan of Coe had back-to-back  RBI triples in the fourth inning. Taylor Bell of Waldorf and two hits,  including a double. Emily Oler of Mount Mercy had an RBI double and  Hailey Duwa of Western Illinois also stroked a double.

BOSCH FINANCIAL 1

Metro Sports Report won a pitchers' duel, 2-1, in the first game of  their doubleheader at Simpson College.

Marissa Promes of Buena Vista pitched the first two innings for Metro  Sports Report and Emma Olejniczak of UNI tossed three scoreless  innings in relief for the victory in Game 1. Olejniczak struck out  five batters and allowed only one hit with no walks.

Megan Rushing of South Dakota State and Hannah Onken of Wartburg  collected RBIs for Metro Sports Report. Lexi Merritt of Grand View and  Melanie Rasmussen of Missouri Western scored runs. Rasmussen hit a  triple.

Madi Parrott of Northwestern Oklahoma State had both hits for Bosch  Financial, including a double. Abby Carlin of Western Illinois pitched  two scoreless innings for Bosch Financial with four strikeouts, no  hits and no walks. Olivia Goodale struck out five batters in the first  three innings for Bosch Financial.

Rasmussen went 2-for-2 for Metro Sports Report in the second game.  Olejniczak drove in two runs and had a double, while Onken and Arianna  Kim of Simpson both scored twice.

Lizzy Adams of Coe and Ashley Allen of Simpson had two hits for Bosch  Financial. Allen had two doubles and drove in three runs. Parrott and  Carlin also had doubles.

Both games at Simpson College were trimmed to five innings due to the heat.
