BROOKINGS, S.D. - Kathryn Vander Poel of Mount Mercy finished fifth in the 800 meter run at the NAIA Indoor National Championships on Saturday.

Vander Poel, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., was clocked in 2 minutes, 16.39 seconds. She finished less than two seconds behind the winner.

Vander Poel broke her own school record in the event. The school mark in the 800 had been in the books for 22 years before she originally broke the mark at the Wartburg Invitational last month.
