Last-second layup ends Marion's season

The Marion boys basketball season ended in heartbreak Monday night.

Robbie Takes' layup in the closing seconds lifted Anamosa past Marion, 51-50, in a Class 3A district tournament game at Marion.

Anamosa (9-14) advances to play Davenport Assumption on Thursday at Muscatine. Marion's season ended at 9-13.

The game was tied at halftime and Marion maintained the slimmest of margins until 1:13 remained in the game. That's when Spencer Barnes knocked down a 3-pointer that gave Anamosa a one-point lead.

Marion post player Jared Huhndorf came right back with a basket in the lane that put Marion back on top.

But the lead was brief.

Takes' fastbreak layup pushed Anamosa back into the lead, 51-50.

Marion’s final attempt came up short.

Marion senior Mitch Wagner led all scorers with 20 points including five 3-point baskets.  Wagner and Huhndorf played a little inside-outside and Huhndorf collected 12 points in the paint.

“Mitch hit a few outside shots and that opened things up a bit in the lane,” said Huhndorf. “The high low post with (Andrew) Davis was working well for us.”

“It was disappointing to lose, but everybody played hard,” said Wagner. “We just didn’t come through in the end.”

Spencer Barnes led Anamosa with 17 points and Michael Maruga chipped in nine.

“I told our kids that people will say it was an exciting game, and it was.  I certainly can’t fault our effort.  It is just always disappointing to lose,” said Marion Coach Mike Manderscheid.  “(Wagner) played a great game, I could tell he was ready in pregame.  This team was a good group of kids to work with.”

“We practiced hard, we learned a lot, and we played hard together,” said Huhndorf.  “That’s what the coach asked us to do.”
