Kirkwood sweeps DMACC; win streak hits 33

PDF

The third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles swept a doubleheader from No.6 DMACC Thursday, 1-0 and 13-5, and went a long way toward clinching the ICCAC softball title.

Kirkwood has won 33 straight games.

The first game proved to be a pitcher's duel between Kirkwood’s Amber Logemann (17-3) and DMACC ace Mari Silliman.

Silliman struck out 17 hitters in 6.1 innings, but made a mistake to Lauren Smith who launched a home run over the center-field fence for the walkoff victory in the bottom of the seventh.

“I knew the first game was going to be a pitcher’s duel because Silliman pitched them to the nationals last year and Logemann has been great for us this year,” said Kirkwood Coach Joe Yegge.

“I knew as soon as Smith hit the ball that it was gone. It was just a well-hit ball.”

Smith simply tried to make a good swing.

“Coach told us to shorten up our swing a bit and just make good contact,” she explained. “It felt great. It was my first walkoff.”

Logemann struck out 13 batters and gave up only three hits for the shutout victory in the opener.

“When you are pitching in a game like that you just keep doing what you’re doing and know that your team is going to get you a run,” said Logemann. “They got some people on base, but that just makes me concentrate a little better and make good pitches.”

The second game also was won with a home run, but in a much different circumstance.

The Eagles exploded all over the Bears' pitching for 13 runs on 14 hits to give Sam Belz (15-0) a five-inning victory.

Haylee Krack, Leah Duffe and Kelsie Campbell each blasted homers, while Smith and Krysta Tutsch collected three hits. Duffe, Campbell and Kadarenna Sales added two hits to the attack.

Campbell’s three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth was the game ender.

“I was looking for a low pitch to hit up the middle and move the runners around,” said Campbell, who did better than that.

“I think winning that first game really relaxed us for the second game,” said Yegge. “Once we were relaxed, we really hit the ball.”

DMACC slipped to 31-5 overall and 18-4 in conference play. Kirkwood moved to 40-3 and 20-0.

The Eagles travel to Mason City to play two games with NIACC on Friday.
