Beyer tops Corbett in Valley 400

Tristan Beyer finally beat Nick Corbett in a 400-meter dash Monday.

Now he wants to do it again. And again.

Beyer, a junior from Prairie, and Corbett, a senior from Washington, are two of the top quarter-milers in the state and they clashed Monday in the Mississippi Valley Conference division meet at Kingston Stadium.

Beyer cracked 50 seconds for the first time in his life in an open 400 and won the race in 49.92 seconds. Corbett, who placed second at the Class 4A state meet last year in 49.46 seconds, pulled up near the finish line Monday and finished fourth in a slow (for him) clocking of 50.88 seconds.

Round 1 this year went to Beyer in the Valley Division meet. They'll likely race again Thursday in the state qualifying meet at Linn-Mar and they could meet again at the state meet in Des Moines.

The Metro Sports Report posted an article about their budding rivalry in March, describing Corbett as the frontrunner and Beyer trying to catch up after battling a hamstring injury last year.

"I read that article about him earlier," said Beyer. "I kept that in my locker. That's how I get my motivation to get out and run."

Beyer has battled another hamstring injury this year - it was his left hamstring last year, his right hamstring this year. Corbett has been dealing with a foot ailment, but declined to make excuses.

"That hasn't stopped me yet," said Corbett. "I just raced poorly on my part.

"Honestly, I feel I'm in better shape than I was last year. I don't know, maybe mentally I'm not ready."

Demetrius Harper of Prairie finished third in the 400-meter dash Monday in 50.59 seconds, so he also finished ahead of Corbett.

"We were hoping we'd be able to race him," Beyer said about his chief rival. "We were hoping we would see him here. Hopefully we'll get him again Thursday."

That's OK with Corbett, who wants to race them again. "Definitely," he said.

Beyer and Harper helped Prairie win the 1600 sprint medley in 3:39.91, with Mitchell Christensen and Mitch Pritts joining them in the event for the Hawks.

Beyer and Harper struck again in the 4x400 relay with Lucas Howes and Jarred Edmonds, the same quartet that won the 4x400 relay at the Drake Relays last month.

The Linn-Mar Lions set a meet record in the 4x100 relay with Perrion Scott, Tristan Freese, Brandon Jeffries and Tim Wolfe clocked in 42.43 seconds. Scott also won the 100 meter dash.

Cedar Falls won seven events and captured the Valley Division title with 152 points. The Prairie Hawks won six events and placed second with 129 points.

Haakon Wilz was a double-champ for Prairie in the 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles. Mitch Pritts captured the 3200 meter run for the Hawks.

Washington won the 4x200 relay.

Linn-Mar junior Josh Evans, who was named the Top High School Male Performer at the Drake Relays, did not compete Monday.
