Tomshaw leaving Kernels for Fort Myers

Cedar Rapids Kernels left-hander Matt Tomshaw is being promoted to the Fort Myers Miracle in the Florida State League, Cedar Rapids Manager Jake Mauer said Saturday night.

Tomshaw, 24, was scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Kernels Sunday against Burlington, but he pitched one inning in relief Saturday night after Mauer was informed of the imminent promotion.

Mauer said Tomshaw is tentatively scheduled to pitch for Fort Myers on Tuesday.

"He's going to get an opportunity. Good for him," said Mauer. "He did a nice job starting for us."

Tomshaw compiled a 2-0 record in Cedar Rapids with a 5.10 ERA. He struck out 24 batters in 30 innings. He made nine appearances for the Kernels, with four starts.

The Minnesota Twins drafted Tomshaw in the 42nd round in 2011.
