Davis Sutton lived a golfer's dream Thursday.
Sutton fired a 4-under-par 59 at Airport National to win the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet and become one of the few high school golfers in course history to crack 60.
Airport National measures only 4,040 yards from the men's tees, but it's a tricky little course in southwest Cedar Rapids with some tough holes that require accurate shots.
"It was really fun," said Sutton, who led Kennedy to the team championship by 10 shots. "It's good when you enjoy your round. Once you get going, you've got a number in your head and it's fun to achieve it some of the time."
The "59" jumped off the scoreboard in bright red numbers.
Sutton shot a 2-under 30 on the front 9, then fired a 2-under 29 on the back 9 for his terrific score.
"I kind of struggled a little bit at the start, but then I made three birdies in a row on 5, 6 and 7," he said. "And I made a few more after that."
Sutton finished with six birdies and two bogeys.
"I left a couple of shots out there," he said. "But still, to finish out what I did was great. I putted really well today. And I drove the ball really good, too."
Airport National pro Matt Erger holds the modern course record with a 10-under-par 53. Nick Miller, a former Cedar Rapids Washington golfer, is credited with the Junior 17-&-under mark with a 56.
Sutton's best score prior to Thursday was a 6-under-par 65 when he won a two-day tournament in Chicago.
Kennedy finished with a four-man total of 1-over 253 to run away with the team championship. Ross Grekoff and Seth Nutt shot 64's and Conner Koberg had a 66. Cole Murdock, the Pribyl Junior champion last week, and Tanner Stewart shot 68's for the Cougars, but their scores were not needed in the team competition.
Matt Junge of Xavier placed second in the MVC Super Meet with a 2-under-par 61.
"Pretty exciting. It's the lowest score I've ever shot," said Junge. "I only had 26 putts, so that really helped. The ball-striking was a little shaky, but I was able to give myself good putts and good looks for birdies."
Xavier, Linn-Mar and Dubuque Senior tied for second in the team standings at 263. Jefferson tied for fifth at 272, Washington placed eighth at 276 and Prairie was ninth in the 14-team tournament at 278.
All six of the Kennedy golfers who competed Thursday are juniors, giving the Cougars one of the youngest and one of the best teams in the state. Kennedy placed second at the state meet last year by a single shot and hopes to battle for top honors again this season.
"All of us are friends," said Sutton. "We've been playing together for the last three or four years. And we all like each other, we all get along really good. We goof around a lot, but when it comes time to get serious we do.
"We all kind of compete against each other here and there, but we root for each other and we all want to see us do our best. And then you've got days like today."
Matt Thrune shot a 1-over 64 for Linn-Mar and Trevor McCann had a 2-over 65 for the Lions. Jake Van Oort shot a 2-over 65 for the Jefferson J-Hawks.
