All of the Metro girls basketball teams can breathe a sigh of relief now. None of them will have to face top-ranked Iowa City High in the Class 5A regional tournament next month.

They don't have to get past No.6 Waterloo West on the way to the state tournament, either.

The kindly postseason pairings were announced Monday. The Metro teams did not get a free pass to Des Moines, but there don't seem to be any matchups that would call for a major upset on the part of the local clubs.

The seventh-ranked Kennedy Cougars drew Prairie in the regional semifinals Feb. 22 and could face No.8 Muscatine for a trip to Des Moines.

The 10th-ranked Washington Warriors will meet Dubuque Hempstead or Dubuque Senior in the semifinals and would face Southeast Polk or Ankeny in the regional finals.

The Linn-Mar Lions will meet Iowa City West or Jefferson in the semifinals, then would face No.4 Waukee or Ottumwa.

Kennedy, Prairie, Washington and Linn-Mar all drew byes in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals, which means they have to win only two games to reach the state tournament. Jefferson is the only 5A Metro team with a date in the quarterfinals.

The 11th-ranked Xavier Saints, the defending Class 4A state champions, might have to defeat No.7 North Scott for a trip to Des Moines. Xavier drew a bye in the quarterfinals and will face DeWitt Central or Marion in the semifinals.

Cedar Valley Christian will play Sigourney in the opening round of the Class 1A regional on Feb.13.
