Uhlir wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar junior Nic Uhlir is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Uhlir is a sharp-shooting guard for the Linn-Mar boys basketball team, which has a 9-6 overall record and 7-3 mark in the Mississippi Valley Conference. He has made 38 3-pointers, which is tied for the most in the MVC with Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar and Drew Marchesani of Cedar Falls.

Uhlir has made 46.9 percent of his 3-pointers, compared to 38.8 percent for Marchesani and 36.2 percent for Bohannon.

Uhlir hit six 3-pointers when he scored 32 points against Southeast Polk and he made six more triples when he poured in 29 points against Waterloo West. He is averaging 14.5 points for the campaign.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Nic Uhlir:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

NIC: My favorite individual highlight in sports would have to be scoring 32 points against No.6-ranked Southeast Polk and helping my team beat them on their home floor in overtime.

MSR: What has been your favorite team highlight in sports?

NIC: My favorite team highlight would be beating seventh-ranked Sioux City North in the final game of the three-day CNOS Foundation Classic at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. It was a great win, especially after a tough loss the night before. The team really came together to pull out a big win.

MSR: Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career?

NIC: Definitely my dad. He has taught me almost everything I know, not only in sports but also in other aspects of my life such as education and faith. He has either coached or attended every single one of my games since I started playing basketball and always encourages me to do my best.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

NIC: I would like to go on and play basketball in college.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

NIC: I really enjoy the business classes at Linn-Mar and plan to pursue that in college.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

NIC: My favorite community service project would be ringing the bells for the Salvation Army with my team (for the Metro Sports Report Classic). I also enjoy going into the middle school and mentoring the younger kids.
