Cyerra Hutchins wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Cyerra Hutchins is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hutchins, a 5-foot-9 guard, led the Hawks in scoring and rebounding this season at 12.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She also had 45 steals and 44 assists in 22 games.

Hutchins was named first team All-Metro and first team All-Mississippi Valley Conference last week. She will continue her basketball career at Kirkwood Community College.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Cyerra Hutchins:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

CYERRA: When I was a freshmen, I played limited varsity. In a basketball game against Kennedy, I was subbed in the last minute and was fouled. I made the two free throws to win the game.

MSR: What is your favorite team highlight in sports?

CYERRA: Winning the basketball game last year against Waterloo West and clinching the MVC title for the very first time in Prairie girls basketball history.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

CYERRA: Go on to play basketball at Kirkwood Community College and eventually play at a four-year college.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

CYERRA: Besides my family, I have always been inspired by former Iowa women's basketball player Jaime Printy. I have always been impressed with her skills on the court and she has always been my motivation to be the best.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

CYERRA: Chemistry and gym. I have always loved learning about the atoms and equations along with playing dodge ball in gym.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

CYERRA: Helping out with Special Olympics and youth basketball camps in the summer. It has always been fun working with the Special Olympians and meeting new friends.
