Eagles win 7th straight in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Kirkwood baseball team raised its record to 7-0 Monday with two more victories on its spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla.

David Sweeting pitched a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts as the Eagles defeated the Canadian Baseball Academy, 11-0, in seven innings in their first game.

Kirkwood trimmed Riverland Community College, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two-out RBI single by Randy Perez, who was also the winning pitcher in relief.

Sweeting, who is from the Bahamas, did not walk a batter during his masterful shutout in the first game. Matt Paciello went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Shane Kemp was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Perez was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Shawn Hagarty was 2-for-2 and scored twice.

Kirkwood's game against Riverland was tied, 3-3, heading into the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Butz led off with a single and Kemp bunted him to second base. Sulliam Rios Reyes singled to put runners at first and third with two outs. Perez followed with his RBI single up the middle to win the game.

Perez went 3-for-5 with two RBIs against Riverland. Angel Merced was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Rios Reyes and Butz also had two hits.

Jamison Steege pitched the first 6.1 innings for the Eagles. He allowed two hits and two runs, but both of the runs were unearned. Perez pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief. He struck out five batters, allowed two hits and one run.
