Kernels win series at Great Lakes, 11-2

MIDLAND, Mich. —  The Cedar Rapids Kernels exploded for a season-high 11 runs and 11 hits on their way to an 11-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday afternoon before 1,085 fans in a Midwest League game at Dow Diamond.

The win gave the Kernels (4-3) their first series victory of the season as they took two of three games.

Righthander Ryan Eades (1-0) went seven innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits. He struck out five and walked none.

The lone run the Loons tallied off Eades came in the fifth inning when Joey Curletta doubled and later scored on a fielding error. Eades was solid during all seven innings, escaping danger in the seventh by fielding a comebacker with two runners in scoring position to end the inning and his outing.

The Kernels took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jason Kanzler, making his Kernels debut, doubled to left and later scored on Bryan Haar's opposite-field RBI single. Kanzler finished the day going 3-for-5 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Mitch Garver scored the second run of the inning after walking and coming home on an RBI fielder's choice by Chad Christensen.

Tanner Vavra doubled to start the second inning and made it a 3-0 lead when Kanzler singled him home with two outs.

The Kernels sent eight men to the plate in the fourth inning and tallied four runs, making the score 7-0. Engelb Vielma's RBI single plated Bo Altobelli, who was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Vavra scored on a wild pitch to put the Kernels up by five runs. After a walk by Kanzler, two more runs came home when Logan Wade tripled into the right-field corner.

Christensen doubled to start the fifth inning and he eventually scored to increase the lead to 8-0 when Vielma reached on a fielding error.

Leading 8-1 going into the ninth inning, the Kernels added three more runs to make the score 11-1. Walks by Altobelli and Vavra helped sparked the rally. Jeremias Pineda singled home Altobelli, increasing the lead to 9-1. Later in the inning, Kanzler finished his terrific debut by singling home Vielma and Pineda to cap off the scoring.

The Loons added a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Curletta's RBI single plated Brandon Trinkwon.

Josue Montanez pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Kernels. Brandon Peterson allowed one run in the ninth inning in relief.

Zachary Bird (0-2) took the loss for the Loons, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits. Bird exited in the fourth inning.

The Kernels begin a three-game series Friday at 6:05 p.m. at Lansing, Mich., against the Lugnuts, the Midwest League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Randy Rosario (0-1, 7.36) is scheduled to start for the Kernels while Adonys Cardona (0-1, 4.50) is scheduled to pitch for Lansing.
