Sellers joining Kennedy girls basketball

M'Caela "Lela" Sellers, a talented 5-foot-11 guard from Minnesota, is moving to Cedar Rapids with her family and will join the Kennedy girls basketball team this season, according to the director of her AAU program and other sources.

Sellers will be a junior at Kennedy this year.

"She's very athletic. Great scoring ability," said Bill Larson, the director of the North Tartan AAU basketball program. "She's getting strong Division I looks."

Larson described Sellers as an off-guard who can handle the ball, shoot, slash to the basket and play strong defense.

"They're getting a player that's going to help very soon," he said. "Any school here would want her on the team."

Sellers played for the varsity at Lakeville South High School in Minnesota this past season as a sophomore. Larson said she also played a little with the varsity as a freshman.

Kennedy Coach Tony Vis said he cannot comment on new players until they have enrolled in school, citing school policy.

Sellers has played for the Kennedy girls basketball team in a local summer league. She also is playing for the Tartan North AAU team this summer.

Larson said her father has gotten a new job in the Cedar Rapids area. He said the family looked at several high schools before selecting Kennedy.
