DeWitt Central rallies past Marion

PDF

James Grill caught a 29-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to rally DeWitt Central to a 14-8 win Friday night over Marion at Thomas Park in Marion.

The loss again stopped Indians Coach Tony Perkins from tying Les Hipple for the most coaching wins in Marion history.

"We had lots of opportunities and we don't hit them (referring to passing plays) and we simply seem to invent ways to beat ourselves," Perkins said.

Marion took the lead in the third quarter when Eli Frazier recovered a teammate's fumble in the end zone for a score. Kory Walsh's 2-point PAT run put the Indians up, 8-7.

"It was my first touchdown dating back to my play in the MYFA (Metro Youth Football Association)," Frazier said. "I saw it pop out but really thought it was already in the end zone. I simply wanted to make sure we scored so I got right on it."

Marion was hurt by two interceptions in the contest.

"Coach Perkins said it best in our post-game huddle that we have to stop beating ourselves," Frazier said. "We are just about there (in terms of winning) and we have to correct the little mistakes that will change a loss into a win,"

Said Perkins: "We try hard and made too many simple mistakes.  It is mental mistakes that hurt us. Our physical play was good."

Marion fell to 1-4 oveall and 0-2 in the district. DeWitt Central is 3-2 overall and 1-2 in district play.
