Kohawks drubbed by Central, 45-21

The Coe College football team appeared to be in good shape at the tail end of the first Saturday against Central College, but everything went haywire from there.

The visiting Dutchmen spanked the Kohawks, 45-21, in an Iowa Conference game that became more lopsided as the lovely fall afternoon went along.

Coe led, 14-10, and was driving for more points when quarterback Josh Rekers overshot a receiver and was intercepted with 1:22 left in the second quarter. Central quickly drove 69 yards the other way and took a 17-14 advantage at intermission and the game slipped away from there.

Central (5-2, 3-1) blitzed the Kohawks 28-7 in the second half and won easily.

It was the second straight lopsided defeat at Clark Field for Coe, which fell to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Kohawks lost to Wartburg, 43-0, at home Oct. 11 and have been outscored 88-21 in their last two home games.

Coe will have to win its final three games to salvage a winning record for the 2014 campaign. The Kohawks visit Luther Nov.1 and travel to Dubuque Nov. 8 before finishing the regular season at home against Buena Vista Nov. 15.

Rekers hit 19 of 32 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, but he was intercepted twice and was unable to keep the offense moving at key parts of the game. The Kohawks finished with 289 yards of total offense, compared to 423 for Central.

The Kohawks gained only 80 yards on the ground. Sam Lahr was the leading rusher with 41 yards. Trevor Heitland led the receivers with five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Central quarterback Aaron Eiseler hit 17 of 28 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Osborn ran for 112 yards, his seventh straight game this season with 100 yards and eighth straight overall.

Coe has lost three of its four home games this season.
