Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Josh Wenger is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Wenger is one of the top wrestlers in the state and is currently ranked No. 2 at 138 pounds with a 28-1 record.

Wenger captured top honors at the Mendenhall Invitational in Ames Saturday, helping Prairie win the team championship in a strong field that included West Des Moines Valley and Waverly-Shell Rock.

Wenger pinned his man in 1:42 in the quarterfinals, posted a 4-0 verdict in the semifinals and had a 10-2 major decision over Ben Sarasin of Kennedy in the finals.

Wenger has placed fourth at the Class 3A state tournament for three straight years. He was fourth at 113 pounds in 2012, fourth at 126 pounds in 2013 and fourth again last year at 138 pounds.

Prairie is ranked ninth in Class 3A by The Predicament.
