Cedar Valley loses Hembera for season

Cedar Valley Christian senior Shelby Hembera has torn tendons in her left ankle and will be lost for the rest of the basketball season, Coach Craig Foote reported Monday morning.

Hembera was injured Jan. 16 in a game against Easton Valley in Preston when she attempted a shot and landed on another player's foot. The injury originally was diagnosed as a sprained ankle, but an MRI revealed the torn tendons.

Hembera may need surgery to repair the injury, according to Foote.

Hembera, an all-state forward, leads the state in scoring at 30.3 points per game. She also led the state in scoring last year as a junior.

Hembera finishes her high school career as one of the leading scorers and rebounders in Metro history. She holds Metro records for most points in a single game (48), most points in a season (730) and most rebounds in a single game (25).

Hembera ranks second in Metro history in career scoring (1,859) and most rebounds in one season (360). She ranks fourth in career rebounding (893).

Anne O'Neil of Kennedy (1996-2000) is the Metro career scoring leader with 2,494 points. Kiah Stokes of Linn-Mar 2007-11) is the Metro career rebounding leader with 1,239.

Cedar Valley Christian got off to a 7-3 start this season, but the Huskies have lost all five games since Hembera was injured and have fallen to 7-8.

Hembera has committed to play college basketball at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque.
