Xavier junior Mitchell Burger is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Burger has been a key player for the Xavier basketball team all season, but he's played some of his best basketball for the Saints the past three weeks.

He scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds when Xavier upset Class 4A No. 4 Linn-Mar, 83-73, last Tuesday. Two games prior to that, he poured in 22 points against top-ranked Iowa City West.

Burger has scored in double figures in six straight games. He has averaged 16.7 points during the streak, lifting his season average to 12.4 points per game. He is making 57 percent of his shots from the field and 72.3 percent of his free throws.

Burger scored a career-high 24 points earlier this season against Waterloo West. He also is averaging nearly two assists, two steals and two rebounds from his backcourt position. He has had four assists and four steals in several games.

Xavier visits Cedar Falls Tuesday and ends the regular season Thursday night at home against Dubuque Wahlert.
