McKenna Andersen wins Metro Spotlight Award

McKenna Andersen of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Andersen, a 5-foot-9 junior, is a key member of the Xavier basketball team that will play Harlan in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The eighth-ranked Saints enter the state tournament with a 17-6 record, with all six of their losses to Class 5A clubs. The top-ranked Harlan Cyclones have a spotless 23-0 mark.

Xavier defeated Harlan, 53-52, in the championship game of the Class 4A tournament in 2013. Andersen, just a freshman at the time, scored four points for the Saints in that game.

Andersen averaged 5.5 points and 2.3 rebounds as a freshman during the 2012-13 campaign and led the Saints in 3-pointers. She missed all of the 2013-14 season with a knee injury, but has bounced this year to average 8.1 points and a team-best 4.6 rebounds. She also has 37 assists and 29 steals in 23 games.

Andersen has scored in double figures eight times this season with 18 points against Kennedy, 15 against Dubuque Senior and 14 against Iowa City High. She grabbed nine rebounds against Johnston and has had five assists in several games.
