McDermott, Saints finish year in style

DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints finished the most successful season in school history Saturday when they topped Williamsburg, 49-38, in the consolation game for third place at the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament.

Adam McDermott popped in four 3-pointers and led the Saints with 16 points, ending his prep career as one of the most prolific players in school annals.

Xavier compiled a 2-1 record at the 2015 state tournament for its first victories at the state meet in four trips to Des Moines. The Saints set a school record for most victories with an 18-8 record and McDermott finished his career as the second-leading scorer in school history with 1,058 points.

McDermott set new school marks for most points in one season (466), most 3-pointers in a career (159) and most 3-pointers in a single season (75). Kevin Andrews (2002-06) holds the career scoring mark at Xavier with 1,199 points.

McDermott ranks 28th in Metro history with his 1,058 points.

The Saints trailed by 14 points in the first half and were losing, 26-17, at intermission Saturday, but they outscored Williamsburg by 20 points in the second half to win comfortably. The Raiders scored only 12 points in the second half and finished with their lowest scoring total of the season Williamsburg, the top seed in the 3A tournament, finished with a 24-3 record with two losses at the state meet.

Xavier defeated four Wamac Conference teams in the postseason tournament with a 30-point victory over Benton Community, a 31-point verdict over Solon, a 16-point triumph over Mount Vernon and an 11-point win over Williamsburg Mitchell Burger tied the game for Xavier, 32-32, with a 3-pointer in the third quarter. McDermott gave the Saints a 35-34 lead with a 3-pointer and they never trailed again.

Calvin Winker made it 38-34 with a three-point play, then Winker made two free throws for a 40-34 advantage. Williamsburg pulled within 42-38 with slightly more than a minute remaining, but Winker hit four straight foul shots to get the Saints out of danger at 46-38.

Xavier outscored Williamsburg 15-6 in the third quarter and outscored them 17-6 in the final stanza.

Burger and Winker finished with 15 points apiece.

WILLIAMSBURG (38): Schlabaugh 3 1-2 8, Koeppel 4 1-1 10, Klein 3 2-4 9, Greiner 0 0-0 0, Heitshusen 0 1-2 1, B. Subbert 1 0-0 2, Francis 0 0-0 0, J. Subbert 0 0-0 0, Stewart 3 2-2 8. Totals 14 7-11 38.
