Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks placed third in the 5K run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City on Friday in 16 minutes, 40.13 seconds. The event featured 22 of the top distance runners in the country.

The runners who finished first and second in the race were both high school seniors, making Jenks the top underclassman in the meet.

Jenks had been slowed by a hip injury suffered while competing at an international triathlon in Canada last summer, but her performance Friday in New York showed she's healthy and ready for the outdoor track campaign.

Jenks has won multiple titles at the Drake Relays and has been a multiple state champion in distance events. She is also a highly accomplished triathlete and was named the USA Junior Triathlete of the Year in March.

Jenks won the silver medal in the triathlon at the Junior Olympics in China last summer.
