Kirkwood earns shot at 5th place

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood Eagles bounced back at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Friday afternoon and nipped Chesapeake, 73-69, in a consolation game in Overland Park, Mo.

The Eagles (30-6) will face Monroe College of New York (27-9) in the consolation game for fifth place Saturday at 2 p.m.

Taylor Silva made six straight free throws in the final 39 seconds Friday to help sixth-ranked Kirkwood hold off No. 20 Chesapeake. She finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists and was 10-for-10 at the foul line.

The Eagles trailed by 10 points in the first half and were losing by five points at intermission, 33-28. The Eagles outscored Chesapeake 45-36 in the second half to stay alive in the tournament.

Peyton Bockholt scored 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench for Kirkwood. Kirsten Larson scored nine points. Madison Wood, normally a deep reserve, provided eight points in nine key minutes for the Eagles.

Cassidy Clark and Ariel Sneed grabbed seven rebounds for Kirkwood, helping the Eagles to a 50-42 advantage on the backboards.

Kirkwood did not shoot well for the second straight game, hitting 32.9 percent overall from the field and 23.5 percent on 3-pointers, but it was good enough to advance. The Eagles helped themselves by making 23 of 27 free throws.

Joy Watson scored 16 points for Chesapeake (20-6).

This is the 12th time in school history that Kirkwood has won 30 or more games in a season.
