Willie Rhoads wins Metro Spotlight Award

Willie Rhoads of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Rhoads, a senior, is one of the top high jumpers and long jumpers in the state for the Kennedy track team. He ranks second in the state in the high school with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches and ranks seventh in the long jump at 20 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Rhoads placed sixth in the high jump at the state meet last year and is looking to move up this season.

Rhoads was a double-winner in the high jump and long jump at the John Ask Relays Saturday at Kingston Stadium. He also captured the high jump at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor meet and placed second in the high jump at the Dickinson Relays, with both of those meets held at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. He also finished third in the long jump at the MVC meet.

Kennedy placed third in the team standings at the Class 4A state meet last year.
