Hawks hammer J-Hawks twice

The Jefferson J-Hawks hit three home runs Tuesday night in the friendly confines of their own baseball park.

Prairie belted six.

The Hawks raked Jefferson pitching for 15 hits in each game and swept past the J-Hawks, 15-4 and 11-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

Jefferson's Tanner Unkel and Bailey Hollingsworth belted home runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener to stake the J-Hawks to a 3-0 lead.

Dustin Carlson gave up both homers in the first inning, but survived to get the complete game win, walking one and striking out eight.

“You just gotta go out there and try harder the next inning,” Carlson said. “It’s really nice when your teammates go out and get you 15 runs.”

Prairie (3-2, 2-0 MVC) roared back with 11 runs in the top of the second, when three Hawks swatted homers. Jason Velvick belted a grand slam, Dustin Carlson a three-run homer and brother Brayton Carlson added a solo shot.

That was the ballgame. Dustin Carlson added another homer and DJ Utley swatted one, too. Velvick drove in six runs, Dustin Carlson four.

The J-Hawks (1-3, 0-2) again jumped out to a lead in the nightcap. Alex Larson hit a solo homer with one out in the second inning. One out later Jordan McCormick walked, Chance Tiedtke reached on an error and Christian Knox rapped an RBI single.

Prairie came right back and put up two runs in the third, six in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.  Utley led the way with three hits, including a two-run double in the fourth.  Brayton Carlson hit his second solo home run of the night in the sixth inning.

Utley pitched five innings and gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out four. Brennan Hammer pitched the final two innings.

“I just go out and do what I do in practice if I’m pitching or hitting," Utley said. "Hitting, I try to drive the ball up the middle and make good contact.  Tonight I got some great help from my defense when I got myself in trouble.”

Unkel, Michael Rooney and Larson each had two hits for the J-Hawks in the nightcap and accounted for 11 of the 16 Jefferson hits covering both games.
