GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels rolled to a 10-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night before a skimpy gathering of 320 fans on a cold night at Fox Cities Stadium.

The temperature was in the 30's and a light snow began falling in the ninth inning. The wind whipped at about 20 mph.

Trey Vavra had a big night for the Kernels as he went 3-for-5 with a home run, triple and five runs batted in. Mat Batts (2-0) had a strong outing on the mound, allowing one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. Zack Larson also collected three hits.

The 10 runs were a season-high for the Kernels while their 14 hits matched a season-high.

Vavra got the offense going in the fourth inning when he nailed a three-run home run to straightaway center field. It was Vavra's third home run of the season and his second three-run blast. Vavra has three of the team's five long balls this year.

T.J White doubled to begin the sixth inning. He scored two batters later on Brian Navarreto's sacrifice fly to left, putting the Kernels up 4-0.

The Kernels scored three more runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth.

Miles Nordgren made his Kernels debut and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed three hits while striking out two and walking one.

The Kernels and Timber Rattlers meet Wednesday at 6:35. Zack Tillery (2-0, 0.00 ERA) moves into the rotation and makes the start for the Kernels.
