Cedar Valley girls win historic match

First year as a team, first regional tournament, first post-season victory.

That was the story Tuesday for the Cedar Valley Christian girls soccer team, which began play this season for the first time in school history.

The Huskies blanked Benton Community, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A regional tournament at the Tuma Soccer Complex.

Freshman Lexi Miller scored her first goal of the season to give Cedar Valley a 1-0 lead with an assist from Hanna Severson. Junior Megan Slagle made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally.

Moriah Winkel collected the shutout in goal.

The Huskies visit Center Point-Urbana in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Fross Park in Center Point.

Cedar Valley Christian has a 7-6 record. Girls have played on the Cedar Valley boys soccer team in previous years, but this is the first year for a separate girls team at the school.
