Daniels wins Metro Spotlight Award

Zach Daniels of Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Daniels, a senior, is one of the top baseball players in the state as a pitcher, hitter and shortstop. He was an elite all-state selection last year and appears headed for the same award this season.

Daniels has a 4-0 record and 1.81 ERA on the mound, with 39 strikeouts and 11 walks in 31 innings. He has allowed only 17 hits and opponents are batting just .155 against him.

Daniels is hitting .458 with nine RBIs. He has drawn 12 walks, giving him an on-base percentage of .549. He's also 16-for-16 in stolen bases, making him 49-for-52 in stolen bases in his varsity career.

Daniels tossed a one-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Iowa City High on Friday. He has allowed only two earned runs in his last four outings, covering a span of 22 innings.

Daniels, who has committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, has compiled a 17-3 record as a pitcher during his career with the Cougars.

Kennedy has a 14-4 overall record this year and is ranked No. 9 in Class 4A.
