Jabe Gonder wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jabe Gonder of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gonder, beginning his senior year at Washington, fired a 1-over-par 71 and captured second place at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Golf Meet at Jones Park on Thursday.

Gonder led the Warriors to the team championship by 12 shots over Iowa City West.

Gonder compiled an 18-hole average of 81.25 strokes last year as a junior, but he's worked hard on his game and entered 15 tournaments this summer to get ready for his final year in high school. He's worked particularly hard on his putting and needed only 29 putts on Thursday.

Gonder has played basketball at Washington, but golf has become his No. 1 sport and he hopes to play in college.

The Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls will resume next week with the start of the new school year.
