Gorman wins Metro Spotlight Award

PDF

Reagan Gorman of Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gorman, a freshman, finished in second place at the 31st Prairie Invitational cross country meet Saturday morning. She covered the 5 kilometer course in 19 minutes, 38 seconds in her first varsity race for the Warriors. She trailed Iowa City West junior Gabby Skopec by 12 seconds.

Gorman stands only 5-foot-2 and weighs about 85 pounds, but she proved that size does not matter in distance running. She dominated her middle school races and has already stamped herself as one of the top runners in the state.

There were 127 runners from 18 schools in the varsity race Saturday, including six Metro schools.

Gorman's older sister, Shannon, was an accomplished distance runner at Washington. Shannon Gorman is now attending the U.S. Naval Academy.
